UNICA, MA European Studies
University Oslo, one of the partner universities for the MA European Studies
The MA European Studies programme offers an innovative and structured introduction to graduate study of European history. The programme has been designed for graduate students with a particular interest in European history, who intend to continue on to more advanced graduate PhD research. What constitutes European history has been the subject of much controversy. This programme encourages students to think about European history within a comparative framework, be that comparing regions, nations, or other categories of analysis.
Over two years, students study at UCD (the home university) and spend one semester at one of the partner universities listed below. UCD is an associate member of the MA in European History programme and students graduate with a degree from UCD. Partner institutions include:
- Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
- University of Paris
- University of Roma Tre
- University of Rome Tor Vergata
- University Oslo
- University of Vienna.
Each of these universities offers courses in English as well as the local language. It is an advantage for students to have a knowledge of a second European language, in addition to English. In their final semester, students write a dissertation on a topic of their choosing, often drawing on research questions that they have addressed in earlier coursework. They receive close supervision from staff in the School of History at UCD.
For further information, please contact the Director of the MA in European History at UCD, Professor William Mulligan. Interested students will apply to University College Dublin directly.
