Institutional History

Roberts & Co., building contractors, were founded by Samuel Roberts in 1822 and based in Dublin. The firm moved premises twice, firstly from Portobello to Appian Way. They subsequently moved to Lower Grand Canal Street. The last family member to run the firm was Alfred Roberts. Alfred was also a relief worker in FRance during World War I being a member of the 17th train of the Friends Ambulance Unit (F.A.U) of the Friends War Victims Relief Committee.

This collection is by no means comprehensive and is useful mainly for examining the type of materials and methods of construction employed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
