Biographical History
Roger McHugh was born on 24 July 1908. He was educated Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, Synge Street and University College Dublin. He was appointed a member of staff in the English Department of UCD in 1934 and was appointed a statutory lecturer in 1948. In 1965 he became Professor of English and one year later in 1966 he was appointed the first Professor of Anglo–Irish Literature and Drama. Roger McHugh was a well-respected academic and scholar and wrote numerous articles, books, plays and ballads. His playRossa won the Abbey Theatre Award for an historical play in 1945.
Archival History
This collection was acquired by UCD Archives in two parts. The first was transferred from UCD Special Collections in 1988 and the second from Professor McHugh's widow in 1991.
