Planning STreet Experiments for a CHILD-friendly city in London (CHILD-STE)
This project delves into the often-overlooked role of children and families as active contributors to the discourse surrounding post-car city visions in urban design. Traditional approaches to mobility and spatial planning tend to sideline vulnerable groups, excluding them from participating in decision-making processes. Engaging these groups necessitates a critical examination of the current role of knowledge production in sustainable urban transitions. A key issue is that the perspectives of younger citizens are rarely considered a valid source of knowledge.
The project included immersive art-based workshops in an underserved South London neighbourhood undergoing regeneration. Innovative mixed-qualitative methodologies—such as performance, enactment, drawing, and model-making—were employed to engage young participants (aged 6-11) and were complemented by semi-structured interviews and questionnaires with families and local stakeholders.
