UCD Open Learning: A flexible way of studying part-time at UCD

Applications for Trimester 2 2024/25 are now open - applying using this form.

Open Learning means you can fit university around your life. Whether you're looking to progress your career, or you've just finished school and wondering if university is for you, Open Learning works for your schedule and gives you all the benefits of being a full-time student, without the full-time commitment.

There are two Open Learning Programmes to choose from. You can apply for our general Open Learning Programme to study one-off modules for interest, continued professional development or to support an application as a Mature Student to a full time UCD programme. You can also apply for our Progression Pathways programme, which can lead to one of 16 full-time undergraduate degrees. Applications for our Progression Pathways programme will open again in August 2025.

How to apply for our Open Learning programmes

Applications for Open Learning are made directly to UCD, and all we require is basic information, some personal details, and then a member of our team will be in touch. There are no formal entry requirements, however, you must be able to demonstrate your readiness to study, as you will be joining undergraduate classes with full-time degree students.

Open Learning Programme (CG01)

This programme is open to students who are interested in studying at UCD without the full-time commitment of an undergraduate degree programme. It can benefit those who wish to explore an interest in a specific subject area, wish to meet those with similar interests, would like to take modules for continuous professional development or to support an application as a Mature Years’ applicant. It may also be suitable if you’re returning to education and wish to explore your interests in a low stakes environment.

Open Learning is for you, if you are:

  • Curious and engaged
  • An autonomous learner
  • Want to experience different subjects without committing to a full-time degree programme
  • Returning to education and want to broaden your horizons
  • Want to engage in university life before committing yourself
  • A Mature Student and want to take some modules to support your CAO application

You can select from our list of Open Learning modules which are available in Trimester 2 2024/25.

Please ensure that you consult our Open Learning Readiness Checker and are aware of the academic and financial liabilities of being a UCD student before applying for our programme.

Open Learning Progression Pathways Programme (U008)

If you wish to progress to one of 16 full-time degree programmes, you may wish to consider taking a Progression Pathways Programme. It is a one year, part-time University Certificate in Open Learning (NFQ Level 7), which you can complete. You can use this programme instead of your Leaving Certificate results to support your CAO application. The requirements are as follows:

  • You must commence this programme in Trimester 1
  • You must complete 30 credits
  • Meet the GPA requirements for your programme
  • Meet the individual programme requirements of your programme (for example, required modules).

If there are more students than places who have met the entry requirements, places will be allocated in the degree programme on the basis of highest GPA (in your University Certificate).

If you are interested in joining our Progression Pathway Programme, we would recommend you join our mailing list and apply as soon as applications open. Places on our Progression Pathway Programme are limited and are filled quickly.

The Open Learning Progression Pathways are for you if:

  • Do not yet qualify for entry to an undergraduate degree programme
  • Want a slower transition to full-time university study
  • Want to build a firm study foundation before committing to a degree programme
  • Want to try different modules before committing to full-time study

Please ensure that you consult our Open Learning Readiness Checker and are aware of the academic and financial liabilities of being a UCD student before applying for our programme.
