About AIMSIR

About us

The AIMSIR Centre is the first dedicated AI weather research centre in Ireland, blending UCD’s academic expertise with Met Éireann’s operational science.

The Centre is led by Professor Andrew Parnell, Met Éireann Professor of Data Science for Climate and Weather at University College Dublin, supported by UCD faculty and Met Éireann staff.

With a €5 million investment from Met Éireann, the AIMSIR Centre will train and support cohorts of PhDs and postdoctoral researchers over the next 5 years.

The aims of the Centre are:

  1. Develop a national AI centre focused on accelerating weather, flood and climate research and its translation to national operations.
  2. Build national capacity and capability in data science and AI in the higher education sector, focussing on applications for weather, flood and climate services.
  3. Build connection and collaboration through a cohort PhD training programme and taught Masters, establishing a pipeline of talented graduates and training programmes in AI for Weather and Climate.
