Franco van Heerden is a recent Animal Science graduate and by his own admission "Ready to Make a Difference!". During his 4 years at UCD, he used the opportunity to volunteer with animal welfare and get involved with a wonderful initiative through his mum with Down Syndrome Ireland. Franco tells us here about his time in college and his advice to anyone thinking of applying to UCD.
"Looking back on an extraordinary journey through college and the memorable moments that occurred during my 4 years in UCD, I think the greatest thing for me was engaging in and embracing the opportunities provided to me at UCD. I had the chance to volunteer at multiple organisations, whilst also gaining valuable experience through the facilitated work placement.
I completed my PWE (Professional Work Experience) during my third year where you get the opportunity to really put theory into practice. I had the chance to work in all kinds of enterprises, consisting of the Beef, Dairy, Sheep and Pig sectors. This was a great way to get out and create a network within the workplace that would last during and after my time as a student. I attended several informational talks and walks with Teagasc, emphasising the importance of gaining valuable information as a community in going forward in Agricultural science.
I also had the opportunity to volunteer with Wildlife Rehabilitation Ireland during my second year of college, helping injured and sick wildlife and providing them with a healthier future. I got to experience and use my studies in the field, gaining a better understanding of our impact on the natural environment and how we can improve and move forward.
A very special part of my journey during college was when my mom, who was working on an initiative and project with Down Syndrome Ireland, got me involved as a training partner with one of the athletes, David O’Hare living in Dundalk just like myself.
This was a new experience for us both, but as we learned and grew together, we both realised the potential we had to have a strong partnership.
Throughout our time together we trained for the 100m, 200m and long jump. It was a joy to see all the hard work pay off when David started competing, relishing the influence we both had on each other's journeys. They say that we all have people who help shape our journeys throughout our lives and this really was true of this experience.
During my time at UCD, I did more and learned more than I could have ever imagined. The valuable lessons learned throughout my time opened the door for me to pursue a career that I always wanted.
Agricultural Science is perfect for those willing to learn, grow and enjoy the fun journeys that come along with it. Learning about the importance of where the food that we eat each day comes from, learning about the handling of livestock and how to best move forward in such a changing environment. You will be exposed to the best UCD has to offer and I am sure the Class of 2024 is in agreement with me. If you are thinking about applying to UCD to study Agriculture, I say go for it!"
