Charting an ethical path forward for large language models in academia by understanding student thoughts on artificial intelligence

ChatGPT, Google Bard, Bing: What do students at University College Dublin think of Large Language Models?

Artificial intelligence is already disrupting the fabric of academia. From pioneering new areas of research to making it easier to cheat on exams, there’s no question that this generation’s students will see the impact of AI on their education play out on a nearly daily basis. 

How should UCD address these unprecedented challenges and opportunities? In this study, we want to understand what students think of AI, how they are already using it in their coursework, and the future they’d like to see at UCD. 

By focusing on students from the College of Social Science and Law, we hope to incorporate interdisciplinary perspectives to foster an AI community that supports ethical, inclusive, and responsible innovation.

Our Activities

Site Images Getting a Pulse on the Student Body
Over 1,400 students shared their perceptions of Large Language Models and their role in academic work. The overwhelming survey response we received will create a strong foundation for future projects.
Site Images Diving Deep: Peer-Run Focus Groups
Our 4 student AI champions are leading focus groups, allowing students to share their experiences with LLMs more deeply. Focus group participants provided diverse perspectives with backgrounds ranging from philosophy, engineering, design, law, and more.
Site Images Sharing Knowledge: Building a Culture of LLM Responsibility
Using our findings from the survey and focus groups, we’ll launch a data-driven information campaign motivating students to ethically use LLMs in their academic work
