Last month, SBI and the Quantitative Biosciences Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, launched the 2021/22 QBI/SBI Virtual Seminar Series on molecular networks of cancer and other diseases. The series aims to continue the collaboration between scientists from both the US and Ireland.

The series opened on October 15, 2021, with Dr. Danielle Swaney from QBI-UCSF. Dr. Swaney’s lab focuses on the discovery of protein-protein interactions that regulate diseases, including cancer and SARS-CoV-2. In her talk, "Identifying new roles for mutant PIK3CA signaling via protein-protein interaction analysis," Danielle outlined a framework for elucidating tumour genetic complexity through multidimensional protein-protein interaction maps and apply this framework to prioritize cancer-enriched interactions that can serve as therapeutic targets. The talk, which was held over zoom, was hosted by SBI’s Prof. Walter Kolch and received a very positive response. The full talk is available on You Tube and is also posted below this article.

The next upcoming seminar will be November 9, 2021, 6 pm Irish Standard Time. SBI’s Dr. Dirk Fey will be presenting a talk titled "Dynamic modeling of cancer signaling for precision medicine." Dirk is an Ad Astra Assistant Professor for Anatomy at the School of Medicine of UCD and he leads the Cancer Dynamics and Modeling group in SBI. His aim is a quantitative understanding of cancer related signaling networks across the scales ranging from the intracellular to the organism level.

In his talk, Dirk will use mathematical models to gain insight into the dynamic, time-variant responses of cancer signaling networks, outline a mathematical framework for personalizing such models using tumor sample measurements from patients, and apply this framework to the JNK and p53 stress and DNA damage responses to predict neuroblastoma patient survival. The talk will be hosted by QBI’s Dr. Nevan Krogan.

QBI and SBI plan to host more virtual seminars in the new year. Check back to the SBI or QBI websites in early 2022 or follow us on Twitter for updates.

QBI and UCD signed a 5-year MOU in 2019 to reinforce the links between scientists in San Francisco and Dublin, and enhance their collaborative ability to strengthen scientific research and innovation. Through this agreement, scientists will work together to identify opportunities to promote cooperative biosciences research and training activities.
