Students from Across Ireland Present Their Research in 'Thesis in 3' National Final
The Thesis in 3 National Final returned to the Sugar Club in Dublin on Wednesday 4th November with a fascinating array of STEM research from across Ireland. Now in its sixth year, Thesis in 3 has grown from a small showcase event for SFI-funded research centres to a national competition open to all PhD students in Ireland working in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths.
Hosted by 2FM's Rick O'Shea, the competition saw over 20 PhD students present their research to a sell-out audience of over 200 people. The judging panel of Margie McCarthy (SFI), Claire O'Connell (The Irish Times) and Malcolm Byrne (HEA) had the uneviable task of selecting a winner from an exceptional field.
First place went to Fiona Malone from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology whose research uses scans from patients as a basis to 3D print anatomically accurate networks of blood vessels, which she then analyses to see what happens when clots travel through the models. In second place was Niamh Kavanagh from the Tyndall National Institute, in third UCD's Cliodhna O’Connor while Martin O'Reilly, also from UCD, won the audience prize.
Organised by SBI in conjunction with Insight and supported by the SFI Discover Programme, Thesis in 3 aim to showcase the world-class research happening in Ireland in bite-sized chunks.
